Hello, everyone! Today I will be offering you simple instructions on how to create a resin iridescent crescent moon pendant. You can view the youtube video here on my channel:
The first thing you need to do is to gather these listed items:
1. Any resin you prefer working with (I use Envirotex Lite epoxy resin).
2. Iridescent flakes (I used Creatology Confetti Glitter in step 2).
3. Tweezers.
4. A small plastic cup.
5. Popsicle sticks or whatever mixing tool you prefer.
6. 2 kinds of PearlEx powders: Pearl White and Interference Blue.
7. Jewelry pliers (recommended).
8. Pinch bails.
9. Screw-in eyelet.
10. Stainless steel chain.
11. Crescent moon mold. (I purchased mine off Etsy from a private seller years ago.)
12. A strong glue (I use G-S Hypo Cement.)
13. Alumilite white dye
14. A hand drill or dremel tool
Once you have all the items listed, you are ready to begin making your pendant! Feel free to substitute brands/ colors/ shapes to personalize the piece.
STEPS:
- Pour the first layer into the mold.
The first layer may look clear, but you’re going to add just the tiniest amount of pearl powder into the clear layer. This gives it a little shimmer when light hits it. The next step provides it with even more shine.
- Apply your iridescent flakes on top of the resin.
Keep in mind that different layers can have different curing times, so depending on the resin you have chosen to use, it is crucial to know what your cure time is. I recommend you do this step when the resin is nearing a tacky, gel stage where the resin is nice and sticky. Take your tweezers, grab some of the flakes with them, and gently lay them on top of the resin layer. DO NOT press the flakes down to the bottom of the mold, unless that is what you want. Take a small popsicle stick and gently shift any of the flakes around to spread them throughout the layer.
- Wait for the first resin layer to fully cure.
For some, resin can fully cure in a matter of hours, others could take close to a day. I use epoxy resin and I needed to wait 24 hours. For this next step, you’ll be mixing 2 separate tiny cups of resin. With the first cup, you will take a drop of Alumilite white dye and drip it into the first cup. Mix thoroughly. (You will not actually pour this resin directly into the moon mold, so there will be some leftover to pour into another mold of your choice.) Pour a little bit of the white resin into the second cup of clear resin. (This prevents the resin from being too diluted from the potency of the dye because a tiny bit of the dye goes a long way.) Next, you will add some of Pearl White and Interference Blue pigment powders. You can use other interference colors if you prefer a different one. Personally, I like the slight blue shimmer on the back layer. When you have this all mixed in very well, you will pour and fill the rest of the mold.
- Allow the resin to fully cure, then remove from the mold.
Once your resin is fully cured, you can finally remove your glorious moon piece from the mold and admire how it turned out. However, that’s not all you have to do just yet.
- Drill a small hole into the moon from where you want to hang it from, then glue the eyelet into the hole.
Take your drill, and carefully start to drill a hole where you want your chain to hang from. I recommend you start with the smallest size drill head, or just barely smaller than the size of the screw-in eyelet. This will be where you twist your eyelet into. You can test the fit if you need to, to make sure it’ll be nice and snug. Once you’re ready to attach your eyelet, you take your glue, and carefully insert the glue inside the hole. If you used the G-S Hypo Cement glue, the tube comes with a needle opening and is easy to use for drilled holes. Now you’ll need to be quick; once you have some glue in the hole, you need to start screwing the hook into the hole before it sets.
- Time for the finishing touches!
It is time for the final pieces of the assembly. Now, take your pinch bail and insert it through the opening in the eyelet. (The pliers are in case you can’t pinch it open with your fingers). Secure the bail around the eyelet. Finally, pull the chain through the bail, and you’re done!
I hope you all enjoyed my guide for how to create beautiful crescent moon pieces like this one. Have a wonderfully fun, creative day!
